Tallahassee, Florida | Lifestyle Family Portraits
April 23, 2018 Family & Branding
Dorothy B. Oven Park

Lindsey contacted me about doing family photos and some personal branding / headshots for her blog and doula services, Mother Rising. Her three children were full of life and energy and her girls had the most precious personalities. One was a snuggler, the other was full of all the two year old personality you’d expect and her son gave me some of the best son-and-mama pictures I’ve taken.
I’ll be announcing details about upcoming spring mini sessions next week. Be sure you’re following on facebook and instagram to be the first to hear and sign up for the limited session slots.

A Season Taking Flight: Welcome Baby Audrey | Sarah Gray Photography, Tallahassee, FL newborn and family photographer

Baby number three always rocks the balance of things in a family. The parents are officially outnumbered. When babe #3 is also the first of the opposite gender, something special happens. It seems a new season has arrived. We experienced this change of seasons when our son joined us and his two big sisters. The time before he was born is marked in my mind as a distinctly different time in our family life.

The Clark family welcomed little Audrey to join her two big brothers. The photos of the three of them are some of my favorites.

This session also makes me think of one of my favorite songs from when my oldest daughter was born. Andrew Peterson writes some of the best and anytime I photograph a family welcoming a new baby girl, the lyrics of his song play through my head.  Here is a portion:

“And the leaves were turning gold and brown
And people came from miles around
To see her when she came to town

And then I turned and walked outside
And stood beneath an autumn sky
And felt a season falling
And a new one taking flight

My baby loves me so
She loves me as I am
She lifts her little hands
Her wish is my command
I’ll pick her up forever if I can.”
-Andrew Peterson/Randall Goodgame, My Baby Loves to Dance, from Slugs, Bugs, and Lullabies

Clark family, I pray that you love this new season of your family life.

Home: Baby Jack is here | Sarah Gray Photography, Tallahassee, FL newborn and family photographer

Each mama has their own, natural way with their children. Some of us are silly and playful, some are real active and vocal, others are quiet and strong. These are all excellent qualities. I tend to lean on the silly and loud side. In our house, we wear our hearts on our sleeves. This isn’t always an advantage. This session’s mama is in the quiet and strong category and a big part of me wishes I had more of that meekness in me. Her children can rest in it and their home was peaceful. I’m also under no illusion that ANY home is always like that. Life with littles in hard and we all reach our limit. I love when I get a glimpse of families whose flavor is seasoned with that gentleness I so long to taste. It is everything “home” to me.

When I say that spring is in the air, I absolutely do mean it in the form of new life. Baby T was born and welcomed into his family last month and they are so so excited to have him home!

Z Family, Springtime Family Photos | Sarah Gray Photography, Tallahassee, FL Goodwood Plantation Photographer

A beautiful day, a beautiful location (one of my favorites in town), perfectly cool weather is the recipe for a great family photo session. I met this family at Goodwood Plantation and we walked around taking photos along the way.

Spring is my favorite time of year for family photos. The light is bright and cool, the weather is perfect, and looking back at your spring session pictures will instantly brighten your mood. I did a mommy-and-me spring session when my son was 4 months old and it remains one of my favorites. Naturally, the mama/baby photos in this session are near and dear to my heart.

You need these. To make them accessible, I’ll be offering SPRING MINI SESSIONS and will announce them in the next week. Follow my facebook page to hear specifics and dates. They fill so fast.

Milo, Age 3 | Sarah Gray Photography, Cascades Park, Tallahassee, Fl Family Photographer

The greatest compliment I can get is a family coming back to me over and over again. It is such an honor to photograph this group. Their oldest son, Ezra, was my FIRST newborn! He’s now 6 years old. In fact, this family is who helped launch me into starting my business and I love them so dearly on so many levels.

Their second son, Milo, just turned three and we met at Cascades Park on a steamy hot morning to take some pictures of him, his big brother, and their beautiful Mama. Age three is so full of spunk. Milo alternated between being a frog, a cowboy, and “a boy named Milo” throughout the session. I love him. His newborn and maternity sessions were some of my favorites.

Happy THIRD birthday, Milo man! You’ll get those three fingers figured out soon enough!

Baby Kolton | Sarah Gray Photography, Tallahassee, FL, Newborn Family Photography

Sweet, sweet Kolton. You are a doll baby and you are my cousin! We’ve had several new babies in our family this year and to say I’m excited doesn’t do it justice. Round little face, chubby chubby cheeks. I could kiss them all day. I take photos of baby’s toes at every newborn session I do. They are so small, so fully, perfectly formed. Baby toes, and the little wrinkles on the bottoms of their feet just leave me in awe. So much detail. So much perfection in such a small part.  If such care was taken on such an unnoticed detail, imagine the planning that went into the character of each child. I’m amazed every time.

For you created my inmost being;
    you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
    your works are wonderful,
    I know that full well.
My frame was not hidden from you
    when I was made in the secret place,
    when I was woven together in the depths of the earth.
Your eyes saw my unformed body;
    all the days ordained for me were written in your book
    before one of them came to be.” -Psalm 139:13-16

Newborn Baby Abigail, Studio Session | Sarah Gray Photography, Tallahassee, FL Newborn Family Photographer

This little girl was just shy of one month old when we took these last week. Her mama is a longtime friend of mine and Abigail is baby number three, and girl number one to join this amazing family. Photographing these two amazing and beautiful ladies was a blessing. Kelli, you’re beaming with joy. Abigail is a precious jewel.

This was also one of the first sessions photographed in my new STUDIO! I’m just a little excited. I’d love to photograph you in it. Be on the lookout for open house info in the coming weeks!

Gantt Family Maternity Session | Sarah Gray Photography, Tallahassee, Florida Maternity, Newborn, and Family Photographer

What can I say? This family is so dear to me. I met them when their two oldest were infants and I had a baby their same age. We’ve been through this season of life together. All that motherhood has to offer, it’s ups and downs, joys and sorrows, frustrations and triumphs. It’s such a journey.

Years ago, as a new mommy, I prayed specifically that the Lord would provide a family, likeminded in their parenting, with children the same ages, who would all get along together (and oh, boy, the stories I could tell), to go through this life with. I prayed for a deep deep fellowship. I needed it so badly. It never ceases to amaze me just how perfectly He answered that cry of my heart. Seeing these images of these five, a bed full of precious children, with another one inside, brings so much joy to my heart. Ya’ll, God is so very good.

B&B, you are blessed beyond measure.

Baby Alexis | Sarah Gray Photography, Tallahassee, FL Newborn Family Photographer

This tiny joy was photographed last year as part of a personal project for me and her mama wins an award for her patience in getting these photos from me. I’ve been wanting to re-learn film photography and the talented, Shannon from Mi Amore Foto, worked on this session with me. I’ve been chicken and haven’t sent those rolls of film into the lab yet. Those images will be shared when I finally get the courage to see how they turned out. With her help, I’m sure they’re fine. I’m just nervous. In the meantime, here are the images I took with my digital camera. They are so so lovely. My oh my do I love photographing babies!

On another note, I have been asked recently about tips for photographing your own kids so I’m toying with the idea of offering a class to share some of that info as well as teach mamas how to use their fancy big cameras to their fullest so really take great, legacy type pictures that only a mama can take of all the day-to-day happenings in a house. In the meantime, you can check out this post from my archives with a few tips.
