Milo, Age 3 | Sarah Gray Photography, Cascades Park, Tallahassee, Fl Family Photographer

The greatest compliment I can get is a family coming back to me over and over again. It is such an honor to photograph this group. Their oldest son, Ezra, was my FIRST newborn! He’s now 6 years old. In fact, this family is who helped launch me into starting my business and I love them so dearly on so many levels.

Their second son, Milo, just turned three and we met at Cascades Park on a steamy hot morning to take some pictures of him, his big brother, and their beautiful Mama. Age three is so full of spunk. Milo alternated between being a frog, a cowboy, and “a boy named Milo” throughout the session. I love him. His newborn and maternity sessions were some of my favorites.

Happy THIRD birthday, Milo man! You’ll get those three fingers figured out soon enough!

This tiny joy was photographed last year as part of a personal project for me and her mama wins an award for her patience in getting these photos from me. I’ve been wanting to re-learn film photography and the talented, Shannon from Mi Amore Foto, worked on this session with me. I’ve been chicken and haven’t sent those rolls of film into the lab yet. Those images will be shared when I finally get the courage to see how they turned out. With her help, I’m sure they’re fine. I’m just nervous. In the meantime, here are the images I took with my digital camera. They are so so lovely. My oh my do I love photographing babies!

On another note, I have been asked recently about tips for photographing your own kids so I’m toying with the idea of offering a class to share some of that info as well as teach mamas how to use their fancy big cameras to their fullest so really take great, legacy type pictures that only a mama can take of all the day-to-day happenings in a house. In the meantime, you can check out this post from my archives with a few tips.

Full Hands

This role of Motherhood is so much more powerful and beautiful than we all believe.  Can you remember being small and scared and just knowing that everything would be okay if you just had your mom?  It’s so much that mothers do, and so much that they are that makes them and their role so beautifully necessary.  This series, a new mother beaming with joy for the little ones she’s surrounded with, so in her role, arms full of squirming, crying babies. I’m overwhelmed by it.  If you’ve had the occasion to be in her role, you may be overwhelmed too.  I find this series of images so powerful and moving.

Baby Gwen – Tallahassee, Florida Newborn Photographer

I was so excited to talk to Haley Stewart, author of Carrots for Michaelmas . Haley was expecting her third child when we penciled her in on the calendar for a newborn session in June. A few days after little Gwen arrived, I snuck over to their house to photograph the little newbie. She is absolutely precious and that head full of hair is to die for. Haley was such a calm mama as I snapped some pictures of her and Gwen, and then, perhaps my favorite part of every newborn session, she oohed and awe’d when little Gwen was laid in position for her solo time with the camera. I love the mix of both the beautiful newborn portraits, and the laid back “here we are with our new baby” style pictures that so sweetly capture the emotions of those first few days with a precious little life.

If you’re here from Haley’s blog… welcome. I hope you’ll enjoy an extra dose of baby Gwen and contact me if you’re interested in participating in my baby plan. As a subscriber to Carrots for Michaelmas, you’re privy to a discount of 50% off any family session, OR $100 off the baby plan when you “Like” Sarah Gray Photography on Facebook and “Follow” this blog.

Ah, I love this job.

Ha! And just for fun, Gwen popped her little 4 day old head up for a brief moment to smile and say, “hi!” and then was right back down to sleep.

“Mommy-hood is such a gift.” – Tallahassee Newborn Photographer

There is nothing more beautiful to me than the connection between a mother and her child. I am so thankful to do what I do and have the opportunity to photograph mothers with their children. Newborn sessions are especially precious to me for this reason. For nearly every newborn session I do, I almost insist that I snap at least a few pictures of the mother nursing her brand new babe. Those days of nursing a child can be many or few but no matter what, it’s a precious season that no mother will ever forget.

A few weeks ago I was in the home of one of my first newborn clients (whose mother is one of my closest friends). She and her family of 6 moved into their home almost a year ago and just last month she purchased a few wall prints from her newborn session with baby number 4, Lincoln. I made my way into his nursery and was brought to tears when I saw the image of her holding him in her arms at just 5 days old, nursing him during one of the “feeding / comforting” breaks during their newborn photo session. It’s a beautiful picture. In honor of World Breastfeeding Week, I texted her to ask if she would mind me posting it. Her response, “I was literally sitting in Lincoln’s room this morning looking at that picture thinking about how special it is and what it represents and how I’d like to share it.” This mama, Bambi, is the amazing mother of 4 children (ages 4 and under). To say she’s busy is a drastic understatement.

I’m so honored to have been able to provide her with this image and all the other beautiful images from their session. So, below are her words:

“Nursing went beautifully in the beginning. Aside from 3 bouts of mastitis. But, who’s counting and who cares? You get to nurse your baby right? Then at 7 months, 4 out of 6 of us got bacterial pneumonia; including me & Lincoln. When GG (one of their twins) was hospitalized, making the 30 minute drive home & back every 3 1/2 hours just wasn’t possible. He got a lot of bottles and Mommy was under a lot of stress. When all the dust settled, I had lost too much of my milk supply and he had gotten too used to the bottle. I fought hard to get it back for two weeks. Got up every 4 hours during the night to pump and almost OD’d on Mother’s Milk tea, but it didn’t work. I had to let it go. He was fine, but I was devastated. I was almost embarrassed and ashamed when I had to take out a bottle in public. Isn’t that sad? I felt like I was going to be judged by other moms. We absolutely have to be more supportive of everyone’s choices as mothers. We’re all doing the best we can. For me, that picture is so precious. It will remind me of those sweet moments and late nights where no one would due but Mommy. Moments I was blessed enough to share with each of my children… Mommy-hood is such a gift.”

It’s a… – Tallahassee, Florida Maternity Photographer

The Atkins are expecting another baby! Woohoo! A few months ago, they popped by an engagement session for a few minutes to snap their “pregnancy announcement” picture.

Birth Announcement - Sarah Gray Photography, Tallahassee, FL family, baby, wedding photographer

Mrs. Atkins told me they wanted to throw a little gender reveal party after their 20 week appointment. So fun. I was there to snap a few pictures of the big reveal and a few of the happy family. Each guest was encouraged to “dye” their drink either blue or pink depending on their baby gender prediction. Tryna’s mom and dad made the cupcakes for the party so they were the lucky first ones to find out the gender of their future grand-baby… a beautiful sentiment to the excited grandparents.

Be sure to look for their newborn pictures in another few months… and maybe some fun maternity shots even sooner.
